Glamorizing Kim Kardashian’s extreme weight loss
Is it impressive that Kim Kardashian thought to wear Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday” dress to make a big, red carpet splash at the Met Gala? Sure. Is it impressive that she lost 16 pounds in three weeks to fit in the dress? I’d be more likely to call that dangerous.
Especially when you consider the message it sends. Since she first appeared on the carpet, there have been nonstop laudatory comments about her and Pete — how great they look, how incredible her dedication is, and how much it paid off. It implies that extreme dieting = glamour, when, in fact, that kind of weight loss comes with significant health risks.
I’m not sure we need more women, young and old, crash dieting to fit some sort of unrealistic ideal, and rewarding Kim for risking her health for headlines only reinforces this kind of weight loss culture. I had hoped the days of Flat Tummy Tea were behind the Kardashians.
