Glamorizing Kim Kardashian’s extreme weight loss
Is it impressive that Kim Kardashian thought to wear Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday” dress to make a big, red carpet splash at the Met Gala? Sure. Is it impressive that she lost 16 pounds in three weeks to fit in the dress? I’d be more likely to call that dangerous.
Especially when you consider the message it sends. Since she first appeared on the carpet, there have been nonstop laudatory comments about her and Pete — how great they look, how incredible her dedication is, and how much it paid off. It implies that extreme dieting = glamour, when, in fact, that kind of weight loss comes with significant health risks.
I’m not sure we need more women, young and old, crash dieting to fit some sort of unrealistic ideal, and rewarding Kim for risking her health for headlines only reinforces this kind of weight loss culture. I had hoped the days of Flat Tummy Tea were behind the Kardashians.
To me, it’s never impressive when someone with unlimited resources (trainers, chefs, assistants, nannies) loses X amount of weight. It’s also dangerous to put it out there that it’s possible to lose weight that quickly. I don’t like the dress for the met gala anyway. Out of all the Marilyn dresses she ever wore, that’s not the one I’d pick for that theme or that night.
A Buzzfeed post about it this morning said something along the lines of, "Even if you don't like Kim you gotta admit when she puts her mind to something, she gets it done!" which was maybe the most harmful thing possibly you could read, especially on a site that caters to SO many young readers. If you just put your mind to it, you can lose harmful amounts of weight in no time, ladies!
Yeah it's worrisome because Kim (and her sisters) are so influential on beauty standards. They had the big butt popular, and now they're taking it away. They made "full figure with curves" popular, and now they're like, nah, skinny is in. From a trend perspective, I get it... they have to evolve and not be just like everyone else. But when that evolution is a complete body change, it's nuts!
Just a weird thing to brag about.. in this climate?! c'mon girl!
Not to mention why would you want to wear that specific dress. While Marilyn was a beautiful but complicated woman and everyone loves that rendition of happy birthday it was still a disrespectful show of disregard of a single woman trying to seduce a married man who was cheating on his wife. And why was Kris Jenner dressed as Jackie??? It’s just super weird but something that will continue to be glossed over
It’s not impressive or healthy and I understand that it’s not necessarily her job to be a ‘role model’ but it’s definitely saying a lot about how she still thinks to this day. Also are we gonna act like it didn’t have any alterations? There’s no way even after the weight loss that her butt fit in the dress so it should’ve just been altered from the get go. I guess it’s all good because they made sure to publicize that she and Pete got pizza and donuts after so yay! She’s just like us!
I agree, Kate. I think it was unnecessary and not even very worth it. I’m seeing this trend of being extremely skinny coming back and it’s scary.
I hate this so much. And I didn’t think it would mess with my mental health but it totally is!! Staying off IG as much as possible today.
