The surefire signs Guy Fieri doesn't like a dish on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives
One of my favorite things about weekends is that Food Network plays Diners, Drive-ins and Dives for a majority of them. There is no Triple D marathon too long as far as I'm concerned.
Once you've watched enough episodes you start to pick up on some things, like Guy's various catchphrases ("Money!"), which cuisines he gets especially psyched for (the man loves his Chinese food) and the truly insane fact that he is a world-famous restaurateur and chef who hates eggs.
He's very obvious when he loves a restaurant and the dishes they're serving him, but a trained eye knows when he's not digging it at all. Because I think Guy is a genuinely good dude rooting for people to succeed he never outright says that he didn't enjoy their food or what adjustments could be made, rather he'll make general observations like "The cheese is melted" or "The toast has a good crunch."
It's the culinary equivalent of saying "Aw, so small!" when you are introduced to an ugly baby. It's so gentle and well-meaning and it's something that makes me appreciate Guy even more. Have you noticed he does this, too? What are some other things you've heard him say when it's clear he's not revisiting that place for a future episode?
It’s funny you are saying Triple D marathon as if I’m not just watching them one after another on Discovery+ anytime.
What I’m trying to say is, I’m qualified to answer this question.
I do notice it! And what I think his “tell” is is something like, “you can taste that [ingredient] in there.” and then, as someone else said, end it with “that’s a sandwich”
I have found he will say very little and just shake their hand. And he will say “good job, man” as a generic tip of the hat. But we all definitely know.
I wonder how much the chefs can tell too. I do think, on a whole, he’s nicer to chefs that are dismissive of him.
He will definitely describe the meal literally. “The bread is crunchy, the inside is hot, that’s a sandwich, my man.”
Though sometimes it is confusing because when something is REALLY good, he says very little initially, which makes you think it’s a bad one. He’ll just nod excessively, and you’re like, eh, he’s not into it, but then he ends the bite with a “Yahtzee!” and you know it was incredible.
Hahaha “the cheese is melted.” It’s giving “the baby is breath taking” from Seinfeld
