Dear Michelle Young, no matter what you do, please do not — under any circumstances — wear light blue on The Bachelorette. If you must break this rule, at the very least, do not do so once you get to your final 4 men. Otherwise, I can't be responsible for what heartbreak might befall you. As Katie Thurston learned just days before Hometowns, the Bachelorette Breakup Blue curse is not to be messed with.
Before the Men Tell All started on Monday, Bachelor Nation watched Michael A. walked away from The Bachelorette to be with his son, leaving a heartbroken Katie sobbing in a periwinkle blue sweater. It felt like one of the most devastating breakups in Bach history, but as a few fans pointed out on Twitter, it may have been preventable if only Katie had been wearing a different color.
Pointing to the on-screen breakups of Hannah Ann Sluss and Peter Weber, Hannah Brown and Jed Wyatt, and Arie Luyendyk Jr. and Becca Kufrin, podcast host Sarah Sem wondered, "why do they allow anyone in the Bachelor franchise to wear blue anymore." And, TBH, she's right. Why are we allowing this Breakup Blue curse to continue?
The Bachelor Nation Breakup Blue curse has been debated among fans for at least a year — since before Katie ever even appeared on Matt James' Bachelor season. There was ample time to warn her not to repeat the blue sins of Bachelorettes past. And yet, as she posted on Twitter Monday, "no one" gave her a heads up.
Imagine what could have happened had she not worn that blue shirt. Would Michael A. have stuck around to hometowns? Would he have asked her to leave with him? We'll never know. What we do know is that the curse of the Breakup Blue is very, very real. And hopefully Michelle is paying attention.
Michelle, if you want to avoid this kind of heartbreak, please, for the love of all the roses in all the world, don't wear the Breakup Blue. Just say no.
