What was the turning point that everyone stopped liking Amy Schumer?
Amy Schumer is co-hosting the Oscars this weekend with Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes this weekend and the general consensus behind the trio, besides confusion, seemed to be annoyance that Schumer was even hosting at all. Mind you, Amy Schumer was *it* around 2013-2015 when her show Inside Amy Schumer blew up thanks to sketches like the hilarious Last F**kable Day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPpsI8mWKmg.
The show won her an Emmy, she sold out shows at Madison Square Garden, and her 2015 movie Trainwreck was a box office and critical smash, so I'm curious when, exactly, the tides turned? Granted, she's not always been so beloved (she's been accused of stealing jokes from other comedians, among other really problematic things) but it seems like she went from it girl to oh man, her?
So, I'm curious was there a moment when you were "done" with Schumer? Are you still a fan, and if so, do you kinda keep it to yourself?
So Jameela Jamil has a story highlight on Instagram called “Gaslighting”. And I think this might’ve happened with Amy, maybe? (Basically where the media is oversaturated with a certain, generally female, celeb so people start to get fed up with them because they think they’re trying too hard etc., outlets like Daily Mail will use old soundbites and quotes but make them seem like new & exclusive interview comments).
She's unliked?! I'm not a comedy person, so maybe I missed something 🤷♀️ Her movie was funny.
I think Amy had suffered a similar fate as Lena Dunham, with a few differences:
-both came from a feminist POV, which rubbed many the wrong way (especially in comedy, which is so misogynistic)
-both didn’t fit conventional beauty standards, which angered, well, men
-both have fielded controversy, with Lena’s problematic feminism and Amy’s alleged joke stealing
I would guess most hatred from the masses comes from 1 and 2; 3 for those whose support has waned.
So, I was a fan of Amy Schumer from all the way back to Reality Bites Back (the comedian-filled "reality show" lampooning Big Brother), and I loved Trainwreck. I always felt she was unfairly vilified, mostly by men. (Figures.)
BUT... my fandom waned amid the joke-stealing allegations. Now, they aren't as egregious as other known joke-stealers, but she does have some material that's dangerously close to other comedians' material. I'm not Team Anti-Amy, but I'm not as Team Amy as before.
