"Defending my wife's honor"
I'm tired of hearing it as an excuse for violence.
To be angry on behalf of your partner? Very normal and okay. Even commendable.
To attack someone for it? Not okay! And, imo, usually very ego driven.
I think men who do what Smith did are having a strong shame impulse.
It's not "I can't stand to see my wife get insulted."
It's "I can't stand to be the man who lets his wife get insulted."
If I were Jada I would have been deeply hurt by Chris Rock's remark. But i might possibly have been even more embarrassed by Will's behavior.

This is 💯. It’s all toxic energy, and I can’t believe he and Jada and the whole family are just totally cool with it all.
It's called a "cycle of abuse." Tension builds in the relationship, then an incident of abuse, reconciliation and then calm. It would not surprise me if Will's family has seen this type of anger before. I feel so bad for his family and kids. They have to go home to that behavior and pretend it's normal.
