There are so many twists on This Is Us, that the biggest twist of them all might be that there is no twist. That would certainly be a balm to fans of Kate Pearson, who many This Is Us viewers suspect is not long for this world. Could Kate be the next major This Is Us death we have to grieve?!

If the death of Kate seems out of nowhere — sadly, it's not, even if the show hasn't explicitly declared the only Pearson sister to have died. While we don't have any reason to think that Kate is heading for her death in the present timeline, it's a long-suspected theory due, mostly, to the show's many flash forwards — in which Kate is totally MIA.

What were the moments that made fans think that Kate could die some time between now and the flash forward scenes? Here are just a few that have raised eyebrows...

Kate's Not At the Cabin, But Toby Is

The biggest reason why fans started to suspect that Kate was no longer alive had to do with the fact that she's the only Pearson sibling who we haven't seen in the cabin, when Rebecca is dying. It's odd that she is missing, as Toby — who we know now is her ex-husband — is present. One theory is that Kate has died, and that Rebecca doesn't recall her and Toby getting divorced — hence why Toby stands in for Kate during Rebecca's last moments.

Kate Disappears From Jack's Life

Toby builds a music studio in his house with Kate so that she and Jack can practice together. We see in a scene that cuts to moments over time that it is exactly what happens. She and Jack practice together for years...until, suddenly, it's just Jack and his friends, and then Jack alone. This could be a hint that Jack is growing up (of course he wants to hang with his friends and not just his mom), but it is odd that the show seemingly makes it a point that Kate is no longer enjoying the thing that she and Jack once shared together. Hmm.

We Never See Older Jack With His Parents

Jack Damon, the son of Toby and Kate, becomes a successful musician, and even gets married and has a daughter in a future timeline. While his sister Hailey shows up to see her niece be born, Toby and Kate are both missing — it doesn't even seem like Jack called them. Could it be because his parents are no longer alive? Or, could just Kate be deceased, and her passing lead to a strained relationship between Jack and Toby?

Chrissy Metz May Have Teased It

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Metz hinted that two characters will die on This Is Us before the show bows out.

"People are going to be on the edge of their seats with characters’ health issues," she told the outlet. "Also, what it means for the family and decisions that have to be made — the dynamic of children in the family. Two very important characters, we will see the end of their journey and that’s always just so difficult. It’s going to be a lot."

The first choice is, obviously, Rebecca, who is battling Alzheimer's. While it could be Miguel who also passes away (he's also missing from the cabin scene) that could be a red herring. Perhaps Kate is the only who learns she has health issues in Season 6, and the show illustrates the end of her story moving forward. It may even be the reason she marries her fellow teacher Phillip: She doesn't want to live with any regrets.
