Is 'Riverdale' Ending With Season 6? Decoding Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's Latest Emoji Tease

Season 5 isn't even over yet, but Riverdale is already starting production on Season 6, and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is ready to tease what's coming. But his Season 6 Instagram announcement seems more ominous than usual, and could hint that Riverdale is ending with Season 6.

Nothing has been announced about Season 6 being the final season of Riverdale, but Aguirre-Sacasa's Aug. 30 Instagram post certainly feels awfully final. "Forces are gathering for the ultimate battle between Good and Evil as the cameras begin to roll on #Riverdale Season Six," he wrote under a Season 6 concept art featuring a half dead maple tree. "But who will stand on which side? And who will live, and who will die? Everything has been a prelude to this." Putting aside the "who will live and who will die" part, it's the phrase "Everything has been a prelude to this" that really has me worried. If everything has been a prelude tot his, then...is this the end? Or is this just the regular Riverdale hyperbole.

Standard operating procedure in Hollywood is that actors sign seven year contracts when they sign onto a television show like Riverdale. And KJ Apa himself essentially confirmed that he was signed on through Season 7 last year. However, that doesn't necessarily mean the show has to go on for seven seasons. And with the pandemic messing with the schedule, it's possible the powers that be will decide to pull the plug and let Riverdale go out on top.

If this is the last season of Riverdale, it will certainly be an eventful one. Aguirre-Sacasa teased a battle between Good and Evil that, based on the artwork, will put the Blossom family's maple grove front and center. Could the war be over the Palladium supposedly hiding underneath those syrupy trees? It's possible.

Finally, the showrunner ended his Instagram post with his trademark emoji spoilers, and they tease one hell of a ride. (Literally, he included a roller coaster emoji.)

A lot of these emojis are ones we've seen before — the cheeseburger (for Pop's), the fire and tornado, the diamond, the coffin, the ring, the shoe, the road work sign, etc. But the one that really stands out to me (other than the baby angel appearing next to the two women holding hands, which I can only hope means that Choni will get back together and raise Toni's new baby side by side), is the superhero.

For years, Archie has been flirting with being a vigilante. (Remember the Red Circle and their weird, shirtless video?) He's always been one sewing machine away from going full on Daredevil. Could Season 6 be the year he finally commits? I, for one, could totally see it. Especially with the way things are heading for Betty this season. She quit the FBI, but she won't stop crime solving. She is also prime vigilante material!! Archie and Betty, teaming up to save Riverdale one crime at a time? Now that's going out with a bang.

Riverdale Season 6 is expected to premiere Tuesday, Nov. 16.
