'The Nanny' Pilot Still Slaps After All These Years

Welcome to Retro Recaps, where we revisit your favorite old shows and give them the modern recap treatment that they always deserved. We've done, to just name a few, The O.C.'s Chrismukkah episode, Lost's "The Constant," Gilmore Girls' dance marathon episode, that bonkers One Tree Hill episode where a dog ate a heart, The Real World pilot, the RHOC pilot, and the Gallery Girls pilot. (Check out all our Retro Recaps here.) Today, we dive into The Nanny. Caution: snark ahead.

Whenever we think of Fran Drescher and The Nanny we immediately think of the voice. If you don’t think of her nasal, Jewish New York honk, you think of her laugh, which sounds either like two geese getting it on or a rather flatulent old man sitting down repeatedly on a set of bag pipes. What we don’t think about is how The Nanny is essentially a perfect sitcom. It was just joke after joke after joke, all of them hitting and none of them especially mean, except the ones aimed at C.C. and she really deserved it. Damn, this show is good.

If you don’t have HBO Max, you might be unaware that all six seasons of the 1990s sitcom are now streaming and it’s having, if not a revival, at least a reconsideration. In the spirit of revisiting the show (and my youth, watching it on the floor in front of a console TV), I decided to check out the pilot episode, which originally aired on November 3, 1993 on CBS.
