How Did We Let 'Gallery Girls' Just... Die?

Welcome to Retro Recaps, where we revisit your favorite old shows and give them the modern recap treatment that they always deserved. We've done, to just name a few, The O.C.'s Chrismukkah episode, Lost's "The Constant," Gilmore Girls' dance marathon episode, that bonkers One Tree Hill episode where a dog ate a heart, The Real World pilot and the RHOC pilot. (Check out all our Retro Recaps here.) Today, we dive into the one, the only, Gallery Girls. Caution: snark ahead.

When I polled readers on what old shows they wanted me to cover in this here column, I heard about none more than Gallery Girls, a one-season Bravo wonder that aired in 2012. Shockingly I never got into it (maybe I was too preoccupied with Snooki and the gang during Jersey Shore’s prime) and now that I have watched the pilot, it’s a shame that I didn’t.

I have never seen a pilot of a reality show as electrifying as Gallery Girls and that we all let it be cancelled after only one low-rated year is the greatest travesty to befall the ‘10s. OK, maybe not, but close.

For those who didn’t watch, and that is probably most people, the show follows six women in their 20s who work in art adjacent fields in Manhattan. However, from the introductory montage of all the ladies it immediately becomes clear what this thing is really about: pretty rich girls whose daddies pay them to work for free, and the cool Brooklyn girls who are doing it on their own and would rather wear shapeless sack dresses and do slap shots (which is a shot where someone slaps you in the face afterwards) than be seen dead pretending to be one of the Gossip Girls.
