As Fraser's Ridge grew in Outlander Season 5, so did the number of occupants. Among the new characters introduced as part of Jamie and Claire's community were Arch and Murdina Bug. The Bugs on Outlander didn't get very much screentime in Season 5 and so if you aren't a book reader, you might have missed them. In Diana Gabaldon's series, they are more significant characters that are involved in some big storylines from A Breath of Snow and Ashes and An Echo in the Bone. But with Starz's adaptation limiting their presence in Season 5, will the show end up skipping those storylines? Spoilers ahead for Outlander Book 6.
In Book 5, The Fiery Cross, Jamie hires Arch as the factor of the Ridge to oversee when he's not there (which Roger takes as a bit of an insult). The older Scotsman has been married to his wife Murdina for 40 years and Mrs. Bug becomes the housekeeper of the Big House. So when Hugh Ross and Sarah Collier were cast for Season 5, it seemed these characters were stepping into their book counterparts' shoes.
Both Ross and Collier were in six episodes of the 12-episode Season 5, which sounds like a lot, but they mostly stuck to the background. Even when it came to their more featured moments, they didn't say much — whether it was when they shared a kiss during the "L-O-V-E" montage at Roger and Brianna's wedding or when Arch assisted Claire in performing the Beardsley twins' tonsillectomy.
