Hi, happy World Outlander Day. Hope you're doing well, enjoyed your long weekend, and are excited for summer. Yada, yada, yada... We've got Outlander Season 6 updates that you are going to want to know, so let me just get right to business.
- Outlander Season 6 has finished filming
- The season will premiere in "early 2022" (with Sam Heughan tweeting February 2022)
- It will have eight episodes
- The Season 6 premiere will be 90 minutes long
- And the cherry on top is the news that Season 7 will be 16 episodes
- Update on Nov. 23: On Nov. 22, Diana Gabaldon and Starz announced that Season 6 will premiere on Sunday, March 6, 2022
After production delays to COVID-19, Starz announced that Season 6 was in production in February 2021 and four months later — even with pandemic protocols — the season has wrapped. "Filming in 2021 has presented an unprecedented set of challenges which led us to the decision to truncate the season in order to bring the fans the most vibrant and dynamic season as soon as possible," showrunner Matthew B. Roberts said in a statement. "Dinna fash, we will then film an extended Season 7 with 16 episodes next year as life returns to normalcy."
I had guesstimated that Outlander Season 6 would be finished filming by June, but I had not anticipated that the season would be cut short by four episodes. But it's hard to be upset at the decision when it was influenced by getting Season 6 on viewers' TVs sooner rather than later. Plus, the extended 16-episode Season 7 (ahh, just like the glory days of Outlander Season 1) sweetens the pot.
Although filming has finished, Roberts noted in the statement that there's still post-production to do. "We are excited to get into the editing room to work on bringing the fans one step closer to reuniting with the family back on Fraser's Ridge," he said. He recently outlined the many elements of post-production for The Official Droughtlander Podcast, so that helps to explain the 2022 premiere date.
The announcement came with some photos as well. And based on the released images, Season 6 should be as "vibrant and dynamic" as Roberts promised... especially if you know what goes down in Diana Gabaldon's sixth book, A Breath of Snow and Ashes. So Season 6 is going to pack a whole lot of love — and a whole lot of drama — into eight episodes for Claire, Jamie, Roger, and Brianna when it does premiere in 2022.
