We are here for the renaissance. Entertainment Tonight reported on Thursday that Oprah Winfrey might interview Britney Spears, and when I say I gasped ... I'm exaggerating. Because that's what people say to prove how excited they are. But I did read ET's report as fast as I could to get to the bottom of this dream pairing.
According to a source that spoke with the publication: "Britney has considered speaking out about her past, mostly because she doesn't feel others should tell her story. She's always hated doing interviews but if she ever takes that step, Oprah would most likely be her first choice. At this point, there is no plan in the works for her to do an interview but when she does, there will be steps Britney would need to take before speaking out."
The source went on to say that Britney is really happy with the support of her fans following the release of Hulu's The New York Times Presents: Framing Britney Spears. She knows we're out here!
If I learned anything from that documentary, it's that 1) Matt Lauer was so skeezy back then, too!! Of course he was!! and 2) You have to read between the lines when it comes to decoding Britney.
So let's go line by line:
"Britney has considered speaking out about her past, mostly because she doesn't feel others should tell her story."
I'm guessing this means her Instagram doesn't count as speaking out, which, OK, got it. This is also a great instinct – no one should tell her story other than her.
"She's always hated doing interviews but if she ever takes that step, Oprah would most likely be her first choice."
There is no other choice and after the gift that Oprah gave us in her sit down with the King and Queen of Chicken Coops, Harry and Meghan, I think we can all agree that there's no other interviewer for the job. A distant second would be Andy Cohen. Distant.
"At this point, there is no plan in the works for her to do an interview but when she does, there will be steps Britney would need to take before speaking out."
First of all, this statement, this whole statement from a source to ET is the first step. And we're so grateful for it! And you can kind of tell that this "source" isn't some rando — this reads like a Statement To The Media. It reads like a press release. And when there's a release, there is press, and when there is press, there is Oprah at the top of her tower, looking down on all of us, just waiting for her moment to descend into her neighbor's backyard to sit down with Ms. Britney Jean Spears. And we can't wait.
