Miranda might have started The Flight Attendant as a baddie. But by the end of Season 1, the artist sometimes known as Evelyn King was Cassie's unlikely ally in solving Alex's murder. Spoilers ahead. But after the first two episodes of Season 2, Miranda is missing from The Flight Attendant... which begs the question, is Michelle Gomez returning for Season 2?
At the end of Season 1, Miranda was knocked out in the tub after fighting with Buckley, a.k.a. the assassin Feliks. But Shane said there was no one else in the room when the authorities arrived. It was confirmed that Miranda had survived and fled when Cassie discovered Alex's Crime and Punishment book in her coat pocket with a note saying, "Took the page and the money, but you should have the book. See you soon x M."
With a promise to see Cassie "soon" and her being an incredible character, it would seem wild not to utilize Gomez's Miranda again. And even without a glimpse of Miranda in "Seeing Double" and "Mushrooms, Tasers, and Bears, Oh My!," there's still a chance she could return. HBO Max has been incredibly cagey about her whereabouts — she wasn't listed as part of the returning cast when new cast members were announced and her name wasn't included in the cast again when the premiere date was announced. But no one has explicitly stated that Gomez isn't returning, which is something.
For her part, Gomez only had positive things to say about being on the show during Season 1. In an interview with Collider ahead of the Season 1 finale, she praised showrunner Steve Yockey, saying, "I hate watching anything that I'm in, but I can't not watch The Flight Attendant because it's so fucking good." Often cast as a villain, she also stated, "Miranda is probably one of the most real character names that I've ever had in my career." On a panel with The Flight Attendant cast in May 2021 for Deadline, she also joked about Miranda's whereabouts after Season 1. She said that Miranda and Rosie Perez's Megan were catching a show in Las Vegas together, adding, "I think our characters would go off into the sunset together and have a wonderful time together in the sun with daiquiris." So it sure seems like she'd be willing to return if the show would have her.
Gomez hasn't posted anything on her Twitter or Instagram saying whether or not she's back in Season 2. But the timing of production seems promising. On Feb. 3, Kaley Cuoco posted that there were "just a few more days left" of filming Season 2. Meanwhile, on Feb. 13, Gomez posted a shot of her flying to Atlanta for filming Season 4 of Doom Patrol. So, it seems quite possible that Gomez's schedule was open to film The Flight Attendant Season 2 before going back to Doom Patrol. As for more evidence that she wouldn't have had a filming conflict, her IMDb doesn't have her listed as appearing in anything else since 2020 except for as the voice of Morag in Netflix's The Loud House Movie.
So just as Miranda tended to pop up unexpectedly in Season 1, there's reason to think she could do the same in Season 2. As for how? Well, fans were wondering before the season premiered if she could be the woman in the blonde wig impersonating Cassie. But that seems unlikely that Miranda would be framing Cassie after their bonding in Season 1. So to Gomez's own point, maybe she's involved with Megan's plot this season. But however and whenever she does return (I'm manifesting it!), Miranda's appearance can't come soon enough for Cassie or fans.
