TGIF is known for some truly memorable Halloween moments: Urkel’s ventriloquist dummy, Sabrina’s clone, Cory Matthews becoming a werewolf, Urkelbot, the serial killer of John Adams High.
But wait. Believe it or not, “And Then There Was Shawn,” the Scream-inspired episode of Boy Meets World’s fifth season (when a serial killer takes over John Adams high) originally aired in February 1998. That’s right – the most memorable BMW episode (and arguably the most memorable TGIF episode of all time) was not a Halloween episode at all, although so many of us consider it one.
I watched it again this year (as I always do) and was reminded once more why, no matter the original air date, it will forever hold a place in my yearly Halloween rotation along with other iconic pieces of art that define All Hallow’s Eve.
The episode comes immediately after #skigate, where Cory and Topanga break up as a result of him kissing Linda Cardellini on a class ski trip. (I understand Twitter was not around in 1998, but if it was, we absolutely would have all joined forces to terrorize and cyber bully Velma online to the point of her deleting her account. It’s not a fact I’m proud of, but I’m sure of.)
Shawn feels like he’s in the middle of Cory and Topanga, and is taking it harder than they are. Listen. I get it. I used to be a straight A student, but when Ross and Rachel went on their “break,” my grades slipped and never recovered. (I wish this story was made up for a laugh, but you can check with my guidance counselor - it’s factual.)
