'The Bachelorette' Channeled 'Top Gun' With Actual Known Celebrities

It's become a running joke on The Bachelor and Bachelorette that the celebrity guests are often more like "celebrity guests". This is particularly the case when it comes to the musical guests for the one-on-one dates, but Bachelor in Paradise also featured a couple celebs this summer that were, shall we say, not in the prime of their fame. But, on Tuesday night's episode of The Bachelorette, the show featured a Top Gun-themed date with some actually recognizable stars from the upcoming sequel.

And, look, it's not like Tom Cruise himself rolled up on the scene for Michelle's first group date of the night, but the actors who did are more known than a lot of the guests who have popped up in this franchise over the years. (Not all of them. Just a lot of them.) The two stars of Top Gun: Maverick, who showed up were Jay Ellis and Glen Powell. Ellis is best known for playing Lawrence on Insecure; Powell has appeared in movies including Hidden Figures and Set It Up.

Naturally, Ellis and Powell had to lead Michelle's contestants through a series of flight-adjacent challenges that in a convoluted way also represent love. For instance, the guys had to profess their feelings for Michelle while spiraling around in a G-force simulator. "Our movie's not just about flying, it’s about competition. And most importantly it's about love," Powell explained in what were surely his own words.
