In a new interview with GMA's Robin Roberts on Wednesday, Bachelor star Colton Underwood came out as gay. "... I came to terms with that earlier this year and have been processing it… I’m the happiest and healthiest I’ve ever been in my life."

The former reality star originally sought out love on the fourteenth season of The Bachelorette starring Becca Kufrin in 2019. He finished in fourth place and later went on to participate in Bachelor in Paradise that same summer. In 2019, he took the lead role of his own Bachelor season, where he chose Cassie Randolph as his winner, with no proposal, just a final rose. The two split in May 2020.

Now, Underwood is sharing his truth with the world. "The next step in all of this is sort of letting people know. I’m still nervous. Yeah, it’s been a journey for sure," he told Roberts on Wednesday morning.

In September of last year, Underwood was hit with a restraining order by his ex, Randolph, which accused him of allegedly "harassing and stalking" her. Within the restraining order request, Randolph described how Underwood allegedly sent her "unsettling text messages, repeatedly called her and placed a tracking device on her vehicle," TMZ reported at the time. In November, Randolph dropped the restraining order against Underwood, according to People, after the two reached "a private agreement."

In his interview with Roberts, Underwood opens up about the "dark and bad" place he got to in his personal life that led to him deciding to come out. "I can list a bunch of different things, but they'd all be excuses," he said. "But I think overall the reason why now, is because I got to a place where I didn't think I was ever going to share this. I would have rather died than say 'I'm gay.' And I think that was my wake up call."

In response to Roberts asking if he ever considered harming himself, Underwood shared a memory about one specific moment during his time in Los Angeles where he didn't have the intention of waking up, and when he did he thought "This is your life. Take back control," as well as suicidal thoughts prior to that "wake up call."

"I don't feel that anymore," the reality star said.

Underwood, who was the first open virgin to lead The Bachelor, also opened up about how religion fits into his sexuality. "I got closer to God this year... I used to wake up in the morning and pray for him to take the gay away. I used to pray for him to change me," he said. Now, Underwood feels like he can, "go into church and be present and not have it be conditional on 'take this off my plate.'"

Underwood is now living in Denver near his family.
