- Summer House -Amanda Batula On How She Met Kyle, And Why Season 5 Was So Hard To Film
Last week, in Part One of my conversation with Summer House star Amanda Batula, she told me all about her status with Hannah ("it's awkward"), her status with Lindsay (she knew Lindsay and Stephen were never going to work), and her status with Luke ("Hannah was telling us her version of the story...") and yes we talked about why I call her Batula Hoops and... I told you guys that I wrapped a White Claw up to make it look like a Loverboy.
Now that we're all caught up, here's Part Two. Amanda and I discuss what it's like filming the show and how she and Kyle Cooke met. It involves cake. (Part Three comes next week and in that one, we talk about Amanda's boobs and going to the gym.)
LFGGGGG, Cookie Crumbs.
The Dipp: How do you prepare to be on Summer House? How do you mentally get ready, or are you kind of used to it by now?
Amanda Batula: I get overwhelmed. I get anxiety. I'm like, “Oh my God, we're doing this again.” It's a lot. Because the whole summer is just a lot, too. So in the past I had a full-time job, so there was no time to even think about it. I was kind of just going to work every single weekday and then all of a sudden, we're out in the Hamptons on the weekend.
Now that I'm full-time with Loverboy, there was a little more time this year to panic, especially because we were going to be stuck in a house together for six weeks.
And I like having my alone time, just being by myself, watching TV, going on TikTok. And I was like, there's gonna be a house full of people and cameras everywhere.
And you had to be on a lot, compared to in previous seasons, when you left the house on Sundays to return to your normal life. You could go home, you could decompress.
I think all of us would be lying if we said that we didn't have a version of “on” for us. We don't realize we're turning it on when a camera's around, but it just comes. Because you know, you're working. You can't just sit there or sleep the whole time; you have to be awake and involved. So, it's just kind of draining. I figured out how to make it through the summer, but it takes a lot.
What did you do once you were able to go home?
Oh, I did not go out or do anything. I mean, I live with my boss. So there were a few weekends during which I slept the whole day Saturday and the whole day Sunday. But there's no naps when I'm on the clock.
Speaking of, how did you and Kyle meet? I don't think a lot of people know.
Kyle and I met in the city before Summer House was even a thing. It was at a mutual friend's birthday party. He'd just met this girl in the Hamptons, and she was my big sister at my sorority. So she was having a party on some guy's rooftop and we were both there and I saw him from afar. I thought he was cute. A few drinks later... he's eating cake with his fingers, because there were no utensils.
I was single at this time with this mindset you know, I'm just going to go approach any man and ask him for his number and like, start the conversation. So I went up to Kyle when he was eating cake with his hands and then we got a margarita and the rest is history. Some... things [happen] in between.
Every relationship is a journey. Are you glad to be over the rough patches?
It's difficult to go through those times privately, let alone publicly. And people will never let me live it down. I get constant comments and DMs of people telling me that I'm not allowed to give relationship advice because Kyle cheated on me.
I think I give great relationship advice, which is, do not run away from your issues. If you have a problem, you give it a chance. And if it works out, it works out. If it doesn't, then you wipe your hands clean and you leave after that.
But, yeah. People love to always bring it up. It's like I make a bad meal and they're like, “Kyle cheated on you. You can't cook.”
This season, we're seeing a very different side to Kyle.
He's always been emotional, which is one of the main reasons that I've fallen so much in love with him because he has this side where he cares so much about his friends. He's cried at more movies than I have. I’m always like, why are you crying?
When he was on the couch with you and Paige after Stephen left, I was dying because he was just so sad and you and Paige were like, it's going to be OK.
Lindsay even seemed fine!
I don't know if I've ever seen someone that has as much energy as Kyle Cooke. I don't think I'm lazy, but he made me think, “Oh, I got to get it together.”
I think we're both finally just accepting that I am me and he is him. And we just, you know, have our own way of doing things. I can't run myself down to empty. So I need to take my own mental and physical breaks and he always needs to be doing something.
He seems like very, very high energy at all times.
Very hard for him to sit down and watch a movie with me.
Part Three of my chat with Amanda comes out next week!
