If the chemistry between Billie and Brad on Sex/Life left you fanning yourself, there's a good reason why: Actors Sarah Shahi and Adam Demos are dating in real life. And no, they weren't dating prior to being cast in the show, so it seems the general steaminess of all those sex scenes was contagious. However, it definitely wasn't love at first sight for the duo. Unlike their onscreen counterparts, their first meeting was actually a tad bit awkward.
On the show, Brad is the definition of forbidden fruit. He and Billie had a passionate, chaotic relationship before she met the stable Cooper (Mike Vogel). But after a few years spent living in suburbia with her sweet, but emotionally distant husband and two kids, Billie can't stop thinking about her time with Brad, even though their relationship often strayed into toxic territory.
Meanwhile, when Demos first met Shahi, he thought she might be a PA instead of the star of the show. In a recent interview with Leo Edit, he revealed his co-star showed up on the first day wearing a "green ugly Christmas sweater" in February, hence his confusion. However, Shahi recalled thinking, "Oh, he's a tall drink of water."
OK, so their first meeting wasn't quite as passionate as Billie's and Brad's, but Christmas sweater-fueled confusion still makes for a good meet-cute story. For Shahi and Demos, love bloomed slowly over the course of filming Season 1, and months after the shoot ended they're still going strong.
As viewers know, Billie and Brad's romance is complicated — both in the past and the present. By contrast, Shahi and Demos' dynamic is downright serene. The couple frequently post sweet odes to each other on Instagram. And even when they don't include a gushy caption, the pictures speak for themselves.
One thing is certain: They're definitely not interested in keeping their relationship a secret. On May 22, Shahi posted a lengthy IG caption about how happy she is with Demos. "Not exactly sure how two people on opposite sides of the world could have more in common, were meant to meet, were meant to be together. But I do know I met my soulmate. I do know I found my forever. I do know I’ve never loved deeper, harder, more ferociously. I do know I’m overly grateful for him. I do know I’ve loved him for a thousand lifetimes before and will love him for a thousand lifetimes more. Happy birthday my baby," she wrote.
You can commence swooning now. Somehow, this low-key celebrity couple seems to be balancing their professional and personal lives on a show where they both have to get naked with lots of different people with ease. In their interview with Leo Edit, Shahi shared that even when they realized their onscreen chemistry was translating to offscreen chemistry too, they made a vow to keep things professional.
"As actors, we both were playing characters that fall for other people. For me, there’s just a noticeable difference between playing like you’re falling for somebody, and actually falling for the person you’re falling for in real life," she said. "But we did make a promise to each other; we care about the show and we care about our characters, so on the days that we had super emotional, intense scenes — we were actors first."
But now that the cameras have stopped rolling, these two seem ready to build the happily ever after with each other that their onscreen counterparts are unlikely to get. And reader, I'm here for it.
