I truly don't know what I expected from Selena: The Series Part 2, but it definitely wasn't a young Beyoncé Knowles making a brief appearance in a moment so random and cutesy that surely it had no basis in fact, right? Wrong! It turns out, Beyoncé really did meet Selena, and that Selena moment is 100% based on a true story. Forget Avengers: Infinity War, this is the most ambitious crossover event of all time.
In episode 6 of Selena: The Series Part 2, a teenage girl is walking around an outdoor Texas mall with her younger sister and her mother when Selena and her sister come waltzing through. The young girl stares, starstruck, and whispers to her mom that Selena is a famous singer. She's too nervous to go up to her, but the two exchange sweet hellos. "Beyoncé Knowles," the mom says, "you better learn not to be afraid of people if you ever wanna be famous too." Um. EXCUSE ME.
It's honestly a ridiculous moment, from the dramatic slow-motion, to their lingering eye contact, to the Beyoncé reveal at the end. It feels like the kind of thing a Lifetime biopic would make up. So, imagine my surprise when just a bit searching revealed that this encounter wasn't just some fantasy of a TV writer, but actual reality.
"I did actually meet Selena," Beyoncé revealed in an old interview with MTV Tres. In the Galleria Mall in Houston. But I didn't say much to Selena because I wasn't a celebrity, and I just saw her and said, 'Hello,' and kept it moving." Beyoncé went on to call Selena "a legend," adding, "I'm very happy that, even though she didn't know who I was, I still am so excited that I got that opportunity."
