Welcome to Retro Recaps, where we revisit your favorite old shows and give them the modern recap treatment they always deserved. Last time, we dove into RHONJ's "Prostitution Whore" episode. Today, it's the unforgettable fight between Bethenny Frankel and Jill Zarin in RHONY, Season 3. Caution: snark ahead.
For my money, the third season of Real Housewives of New York City is not just the best season of Housewives of all time, but one of the best seasons of television of all time. Who needs to figure out whether or not Tony Soprano died at the end of The Sopranos when we’re still trying to figure out exactly what was wrong with Kelly Killoren Bensimon on Scary Island.
But the center of the whole season — and even Scary Island — is the dissolution of the friendship between Jill Zarin and the once and future Skinny Girl queen Bethenny Frankel. Watching the Lucy and Ethel of the series descend into enemies was fascinating television, so good that I thought it was worth rewatching a bunch of old episodes and seeing if it hits differently.
When I first watched the season back in 2010, I remember thinking that it seemed like the whole thing was Jill Zarin’s fault, but it was really hard to parse entirely because most of the events that the two were arguing about happened over the summer when cameras weren’t rolling.
