Welcome to Retro Recaps, where we revisit your favorite old shows and give them the modern recap treatment that they always deserved. We've done Buffy's silent episode, Friends' 18-page letter, Sex and the City's Fleet Week episode, Gossip Girl's Snowflake Ball episode, and The O.C.'s Chrismukkah episode. Today, we dive into Gilmore Girls. Caution: snark ahead.
I don’t know why, but something about Gilmore Girls never grabbed me, which is strange considering I talk a lot and I’m from Connecticut so seems like I am basically the third Gilmore Girl, despite not being a girl and not being named Gilmore except for that really awkward period right after college when I decided to start dressing as a Victorian gentleman for no discernible reason. That means when I decided to take on this show for my latest look back into the world before recaps, I was coming to it fresh.
Well, not entirely fresh. The show seems to have only grown since it’s been on the air in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s. Part of it has to do with the fact that costar Melissa McCarthy become a global superstar and one of the 25 best actors of the century, and part of it has to do with the creator Amy Sherman-Palladino going on to create the Emmy-winning The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. I do watch that Amazon show and it has a lot in common with Gilmore Girls, particularly the amount of fast-talking that the female protagonists do. In fact, Gilmore Girls is just like Maisel, but without the coats and the apartments, which is, honestly, the only reason that I watch Maisel.
