In Defense Of Devi In 'Never Have I Ever' Season 2

Never Have I Ever, we need to talk. A grave injustice has been committed against Devi Vishwakumar, and I, for one, demand answers. In Season 2, Devi was suspended for an entire week after accidentally starting a rumor about her new friend Aneesa. The punishment did not fit the crime.

Is Devi guilty of telling the entire school that Aneesa suffered from anorexia? Yes. In a fit of rage after seeing Aneesa go into the hook-up tent with her ex, Ben, Devi described Aneesa as being anorexic, saying that she'd never seen her eat before. She didn't mean to start a massive rumor, nor did she know that it was actually true. But, by the next morning, everyone knew. So, is it bad? Absolutely. But does that warrant an entire week's suspension? No, and I'm still super confused as to how that happened.

I think I speak for anyone who has ever been in high school when I say that a week's suspension is a lot. Especially for a straight-A student who hasn't had any disciplinary issues previously. And yet, the way Season 2 unfolds, it seems clear that the show wants us to feel like Devi got what she deserved. Even worse, it's just accepted that everyone around Devi believes that she started the rumor on purpose, despite the fact that we actually see her do it in an uncalculated fit of jealousy. I'm not saying what she did was right — what she did was messed up, and she deserved to face the consequences — but the exaggerated reactions of her principal and her mother are so unreasonable, it just left me feeling like Devi was being shut down for something she really couldn't control.
