Oh man, there is nothing like an old-school MGM musical. My favorites though:

-Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (it’s a must-see, even if it’s extraordinarily misogynistic)

-Oklahoma, because I love that there’s a whole proud song about being a slut. Ahead of its time. 

-The Little Mermaid, cuz Ursula’s a bad bitch

To me, WWS, Carousel, and other death musicals can suck it. Musicals should be joyful, full stop. 

For me, the classic WSS is, bar none, my favorite movie musical of all time. 

The new one was damn good, but i don't think it quite reaches the highs of the original. 

Parts of West Side Story are great, but: a) man, is it a bummer, and b) Maria and Tony are the most boring characters of the bunch. (I guess you could say the same for Romeo and Juliet in the play.)

It depends how we're ranking them, but if it's by ones I enjoyed the most...

::snaps fingers:: Listen up Jets and Sharks, West Side Story is on HBO Max and Disney+ today! 

Steven Spielberg's stunning, Oscar-nominated 2021 adaptation of the beloved musical is available to stream, which is great news for those of us who actually caught it on the big screen and loved it. (Of all the Best Picture noms, The Power of the Dog and West Side Story are far and away my favorites.) 

Ansel Elgort aside (he's actively terrible in it, while his cast mates are incredible), this is a glorious take on the Bernstein/Sondheim classic and will introduce a whole new generation to this timeless Shakespearean tale.
