I just give a vague, "Alright, I hate to cut this short, but I actually have to run!" You don't have to come up with a lie and it implies you're sorry to end the convo (okay, that's a lie) but you've got places to be. 

My go to is always, "ooh, I need to take care of something for work!" 

I've found that most people don't want to stand in your way when it comes to making a living. So whip out your phone, feign an important email just came in and run! 

 "I'm really busy right now, I don't have time to talk."  

“So sorry, I’ve gotta use the bathroom/get another drink/go say hi to this person I see, but it was so great talking to you!” The last part is crucial. Then no one is under the impression the convo will continue.”  

In the south we just say ‘aight na’ or ‘I ain’t gon hold ya’ and they politely get the hint

My favorite thing that I've heard Southerners say is "Well let me let you go!" So it seems like you don't want to take up  more of THEIR time! Super polite! 

At a social event, swig the rest of your drink. “Alright, I’m gonna go get another.” You get out of the conversation AND get an excuse to order another drink!

The hardest thing is to get out of a conversation without anywhere legitimate to go. It’s easy to say you have to run since you have to wake up early or whatever, but at a networking event it’s like… sorry, I gotta go stand over there now?

Now that we're more out and about, my social skills are in the gutter after two years of being inside, and I find it really hard to exit conversations I don't want to be in. 

I feel like I used to be smooth at this, but not anymore!!
