I always prefer a non-sequitor card. One that has nothing to do with my friend or is otherwise ridiculous. 

It really depends on the recipient. I prefer funny for myself or friends, but relatives are getting a serious one, because let's be real.

I'm picking out a birthday card for a friend and I'm torn -- do I go funny/cute or something a little more serious? Are serious birthday cards only for your parents or are you touched by them?
