I think you can take the high road while also standing up for yourself. I usually try to not stoop to low levels, but I absolutely will call someone out on taking advantage of me or being unfair. You just need to think of your response before, because responding in the moment never ends well! 

It depends on what it is! Sometimes I’ll just ignore.  but if I’m being completely honest I don’t take the low road I drag people to hell. Because if I check myself and realize that my intentions were pure or if I didn’t do anything to warrant a certain negative reaction then I’m going to show you why what you did was wrong and make sure you never do it again. 

My mama always told me to take the high road and now that I'm getting older, I've been thinking about this advice. 

Mostly, I think it's true -- it's sort of a riff on "do unto others as you'd have done to you."

But I also wonder if it grooms a little bit of a fear of confrontation, or a fear of standing up for yourself. I don't think you need to take the LOW ROAD, but to me, high road often means staying silent.
