It's been almost a year since fans watched in shock as Alex Karev unceremoniously left his wife, Jo, to live a happy life with Izzie. Fans were furious. Now, the other woman is speaking out, and it turns out, Katherine Heigl wasn't a fan of how Alex left Grey's Anatomy either.
Heigl starred as Izzie Stevens on Grey's Anatomy for five seasons, returning briefly in Season 6 to wrap up her storyline. And while she doesn't watch the show anymore, she decided to weigh in on last season's big Alex-Izzie twist. "Listen, isn't that an asshole move?" she said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. Yes, Katherine, it is an asshole move, thank you for saying so.
Alex leaving his wife without a word to go raise twins on a farm with Izzie was probably one of the most asshole moves in Grey's Anatomy history — including Derek lying to Meredith about being married and Izzie leaving Alex in the first place.
Heigl refrained from saying what we were all thinking: that the twist went against all of Alex's character development and made Izzie seem like a master manipulator who had their children without Alex's consent. But still, it's nice to have her distaste for the Alex twist on the record. Does this mean we can count Heigl on Team #JusticeForJo?
It's not surprising that Heigl would be so candid about her thoughts. Despite the actor telling ET that she would "never say never" to a comeback, it's been pretty clear for years that Heigl would never be coming back to Grey Sloane. In 2019, when asked if she'd consider coming back to Grey's, Heigl told ET that she didn't really have a strong interest in seeing what Izzie would be up to today, saying, "I haven't [thought about Izzie] in years." And, if she had, she probably wouldn't have guessed that Izzie would have Alex's children without him.
Now that Heigl has weighed in on Alex and Izzie's fate, all I want is to hear from Justin Chambers himself. The actor left Grey's pretty unceremoniously, not even really returning for a farewell episode. And he has yet to comment on how his character was written out of the show. It's unclear whether or not he'd ever be interested in returning, but if there's any justice in the world of Grey's, Alex will get a chance to redo his goodbye. Or he'll just be an asshole forever.
