DeLuca's Fate On 'Grey's Anatomy' Is The Twist We Didn't See Coming

"Just beachy," is one way to describe tonight's Grey's Anatomy episode. After a high-stakes Station 19 crossover episode, Grey's Anatomy fans watched as DeLuca fought for his life after being stabbed by the sex trafficker that re-appeared at Grey's Sloan before the season's winter hiatus. But unlike the last three months of no new episodes, we don't have to wait to find out what happened to DeLuca on Grey's. Although maybe we wish that was the case?

Spoilers for Grey's Anatomy "Helplessly Hoping"

In the Station 19 episode leading into Grey's Anatomy's "Helplessly Hoping," DeLuca and his sister Carina chase Opal, the sex trafficker that was in Season 16 of the show. It results in a life-threatening injury that lands DeLuca on Death Beach with Meredith, who is still fully unresponsive in her intubated state due to her battle with COVID. And while previously dead characters have appeared on the beach (Derek and George), we've also seen fully alive characters, like Richard and Bailey, show up too. So, DeLuca's appearance in a cream henley and khaki pant isn't an immediate kiss of death like it may appear to be. Unfortunately, it totally is what it appears to be.

When DeLuca first appears on the beach, he asks the resident beach bum, "Are we alive?" Meredith, without skipping a beat and also without a care in the world it seems, responds, "I think so!" OK Mer, didn't realize this beach was allowing you full self-awareness — where was that confidence later on in the episode?
