Who's Sitting On The Iron Throne In 'House Of The Dragon' Teaser Trailer?

Dragons may not have helped Daenerys Targaryen take the Iron Throne at the end of Game of Thrones. But the fire-breathing creatures sure helped the rest of her family in the House of the Dragon teaser trailer. "Gods, kings, fire, and blood," Matt Smith's Daemon Targaryen says in the preview. "Dreams didn't make us kings. Dragons did." But which Targaryen is seated on the Iron Throne in the Game of Thrones prequel? And why am I so mad about it for Daenerys's sake?! (Actually, you should already know the answer to the latter.)

The House of the Dragon teaser, which dropped on Oct. 5, touts that the prequel takes place "200 years before the fall of the throne." And while Daenerys Targaryen is rolling in her grave (as Drogon supervises) due to the disrespect that was shown to her in the Game of Thrones finale, it still feels kind of good — and very foreboding — to see a Targaryen on the Iron Throne again.

Based on George R. R. Martin's Fire & Blood, Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) will be the King of the Seven Kingdoms when the House of the Dragons begins. During a banquet scene, it looks like Viserys and his second wife Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) are seated at a table in front of the Iron Throne. In another shot, Viserys is shown gripping a sword while seated on the throne.

But what is a Game of Throne show if not people vying for power? In a far less welcoming scene, the Iron Throne is shown dimly lit in the Great Hall of the Red Keep. It's an even more sinister Iron Throne than seen in Game of Thrones with swords framing the steps up to it. (Book fans on Reddit are praising it for looking more authentic to how it's described by Martin in his novels.)

It's difficult to confirm if it's King Viserys I seated on the throne in this scene, but a woman approaches. And based on her platinum blonde hair, it's also a Targaryen. Most likely, it's Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy).

Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen is Viserys's first-born child. But, because she is a woman, her claim as heir to the throne is challenged by her younger half-brother, Aegon II Targaryen. This Targaryen civil war between siblings is known as the Dance of the Dragons and will play a major part in House of the Dragon. A young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) is also shown in the throne room earlier in the teaser, seemingly admire what should be hers one day.

Although House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, it's a reminder that some things never change (even in Westeros) with a female Targaryen trying to take her rightful place on the Iron Throne. But Game of Thrones fans will have to wait until 2022 to see if Rhaenyra Targaryen's fate differs from her ancestor Daenerys's. Let's just say it better.
