Whatever Happened To Our Beloved Twitter Celebrities?

The year 2020 was a year of many goodbyes. We said goodbye to a decade, goodbye to the Trump presidency, and within the arena of pop culture, we bid adieu to the once-beloved Online Celebrity.

The emergence and subsequent reign of the Online Celebrity began in the latter half of the 2010s, when well-known celebrities began to utilize social media apps like Twitter to brand themselves as hilarious, relatable icons. Though many of these Online Celebrities were famous before they entered the Twittersphere, they weren’t necessarily stanned. But that began to change rapidly – for every niche corner of the internet, there was a celebrity ready to fill it.

Ryan Reynolds, filling the “Relatable Twitter Dad'' niche, propelled himself from the B-List to A-List by sharing his dry-humor takes on fatherhood and fame. Chrissy Teigen’s unfiltered tweets about cooking, motherhood, and family cast her in the A-List internet celebrity role of “Relatable Twitter Mom.” By sharing poetic messages of inspiration on Twitter, the already famous and respected Lin-Manuel Miranda became Twitter’s go-to beacon of positivity.

By 2017, nearly every pop culture website was flooded with articles titled “15 Celeb Tweets You Missed This Week” and “21 Absolutely Hilarious Celebrities On Twitter And Their Funniest Tweet Ever.”

The level of hype that surrounded celebrities joining Twitter may seem silly now, but within the landscape of 2010s pop-culture, this was a thrilling new phenomenon. Never before had we seen famed author J.K. Rowling clapback against a hater! Never before had we seen Cole and Dylan Sprouse engage in brotherly banter in real-time! Never before had we seen Kylie Jenner discover the concept of putting milk into cereal!
