I Was Not Prepared For This New Version Of Jesse McCartney

Tik Tok’s FYP (For You Page) knows me better than I know myself. It correctly predicted I’d be down to watch people melt a brick of feta into a casserole dish of pasta. It knew I’d be fascinated with that Scottish woman who believes she’s the reincarnation of Marilyn Monroe just because she lives in her old house. It also foretold my obsession with #windowtok, a cleaning community of squeegee enthusiasts.

But this week, I was knocked back on my ass by a dance vid featuring a man I assumed to be a professional Leonardo DiCaprio impersonator.

Then I looked at the user. It was none other than “Beautiful Soul” singer Jesse McCartney. WTF. I was not prepared for hot 34-year-old Jesse McCartney to look like a more hydrated, younger version of Leo. Life... altered forever.

I had not thought of Jesse McCartney in a pretty long time. For those with foggy long-terms, or who were younger when he was at his peak, McCartney was kind of the original Justin Bieber. A slick-haired, good boy vocalist with cutesy lyrics that hint about first base, set to R&B backing tracks. “Beautiful Soul” was his breakout track, but you’d recognize the opening bars to “Leavin’,” and once you hear “How Do You Sleep?” ft Ludacris, I promise the memories will come flooding back.

At the height of McCartney’s fame, he was not just a pop star featured on way too many soundtracks, but also played a pop star in nearly anything and everything marketed toward tween girls in the early 2000s. From recurring appearances on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody to Hannah Montana to All My Children to Punk’d, Jesse was always there while the leads swooned.
