On Sept. 14, 2021, Britney Spears pulled a Will Hunting and went to see about a boy. No note. No goodbye. No see ya later. Just left. After 13 years in a conservatorship she wanted no part of, after a decade on social media, and two days after her engagement to Sam Asghari, Britney unceremoniously deleted the portal between her world and ours – I'm talking about Instagram, of course – and disappeared.
According to Variety, her final Instagram post read:
Growing up in a world where basically almost everything I did was controlled by someone else… I hope this message gets to people who have been confused or manipulated by a system !!!!” Spears wrote in her caption alongside a screenshot of the article. “No … you’re not alone and no … you’re not crazy !!!! People need to hear this before it’s TOO LATE !!!! I’ve waited 13 years and counting for my freedom !!!!!
She's not gone for long. She wrote on Twitter that it's just a break, but as with anything remotely autonomous about Britney's choices, you love to see it.
She's free, because as we all know, one can only truly be free when not constrained in the shackles of the algorithm. Who knows for how long Britney will be gone, but for now, we'll revel in the silence.
