Bridgerton fans, rejoice. There's a Bridgerton spinoff coming to Netflix. The series, which will focus on a young Queen Charlotte, will be produced and written by Shonda Rhimes. The "limited series," as Variety calls it, will also feature storylines around young Violet Bridgerton and Lady Danbury.
“As we continue to expand the world of Bridgerton, we now have the opportunity to devote even more of the Shondaland fold to the Bridgerton-verse,” Rhimes said in a statement.
The limited prequel series news comes on the heels of Bridgerton's Seasons 2, 3 and 4 renewals, which, of course, wasn't without controversy. Fans (including the one and only Kimberly Kardashian) were heartbroken to learn that Season 1's star of the screen and of our hearts, Rege-Jean Page, wasn't returning for any more episodes.
Rhimes was shocked by the fan reaction, telling the Hollywood Reporter on May 12: “I don’t think I fully expected or understood what releasing all eight episodes around the globe at once was going to do. I was like, ‘I’ve killed many a man that people adore.’ I’m so surprised that everybody is [losing it over a character we’ve watched] for eight episodes leaving."
There are plenty of theories as to why Page isn't returning for Season 2, but enough about him. What else do we know about the young Queen Charlotte spinoff?
Deadline reports that the series will center around the "rise and love life" of Queen Charlotte.
In a statement, Netflix said:
“Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world, and I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton,” said Netflix head of global TV Bela Bajaria.
“Shonda and her team are thoughtfully building out the Bridgerton universe so they can keep delivering for the fans with the same quality and style they love. And by planning and prepping all the upcoming seasons now, we also hope to keep up a pace that will keep even the most insatiable viewers totally fulfilled.”
The expansion of the Bridgerton universe is great news. Now, if only they'd release more about the spinoff. We'll keep you updated...
