An Analysis Of The Golden Globes Zoom Backgrounds

There are winners at the Golden Globes, and then there are winners at the Golden Globes. And tonight, despite losing his category to Daniel Kaluuya, Bill Murray was a winner tonight. Why? Because his Zoom background at the Golden Globes differed from the Ramada Inn curtains or bookshelf backgrounds that most celebrities were sporting behind them during the ceremony. (Also, for those who did choose a bookshelf — I have to ask: How many of those books have you actually read?).

While the 2021 Golden Globes channeled the vibe of last year — chaotic and cringeworthy — it did allow audiences at home to play a little game of I Spy and also critique the homes and backgrounds of the rich and famous. So let's take a closer look at some of the most noteworthy Zoom backgrounds during the Globes and try to figure out what exactly is going on.

Bill Murray

Bill Murray nailed this one. Not only is he outside (point), he has on a tropical shirt (point), and is drinking a martini (point). And to top it off, his martini seems to have an enormous lemon slice in it. That's not even the strangest thing that happened during this award!

Colin Farrell

Colin Farrell was only there to introduce The Father, and yet he gave us so much more than that. A globe! BONGOS! Eyebrows!

Jeff Daniels
