The 2021 Oscar Nomination Snubs — Here's What You Need To Know

Although the past year has been full of the unexpected (remember murder hornets?), the 2021 Oscar nominations weren't that full of surprises. Presented by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Nick Jonas, and Nick's blinding-as-the-sun suit (he wanted to greet the West Coasters watching at 5 a.m. accordingly), Academy members honored films like Judas and the Black Messiah, Minari, and Promising Young Woman with major nominations. But, as with every nominee list, that doesn't mean everyone was satisfied. And just as quickly as the nominees could leave the Jonas' mouths, people were talking of the snubs of the 2021 Academy Awards.

There will be a lot to celebrate when the Academy Awards air on ABC on April 25 with two female directors (Emerald Fennell and Chloé Zhao) nominated, Minari rightfully not being relegated to a "foreign" category, and more actors of color being recognized than in past years. But the Academy is far from perfect. For instance, who exactly was the lead actor in Judas and the Black Messiah if both Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield are considered supporting? Let's look at the exclusions people aren't so pleased with when it comes to the 2021 Oscar nominees.

  • Dominique Fishback for Best Supporting Actress in Judas and the Black Messiah

Her costars will be competing against each other in the Best Supporting Actor category, but Dominique Fishback's performance in Judas and the Black Messiah was overlooked.

  • Jared Leto for Best Supporting Actor in The Little Things
  • Alan Kim for Best Supporting Actor in Minari

The 8-year-old Minari actor may have been a long shot, but he nabbed a BAFTA nomination in this category. At least there's his Oscar red carpet fashion to look forward to... bring on the tiny tux!
