Hell no! Let your date get and pay for the gift. I wouldn't even think twice about it.

If you're polite, you ask your date whether you should contribute to the gift. If your date is polite, he will say no. 

It's absolutely the responsibility of the invited half to purchase the gift. You are contributing by keeping the invited company, and being a sport by meeting and dancing with a bunch of strangers for an entire night. 

It depends on how well you know the bride and groom. I assume not well, considering you‘re a +1, so I don’t think you are on the hook for gift contribution. Has your date asked you to contribute?

What's standard practice here? You're invited as a +1 to a wedding for a couple you don't know. Do you contribute to the gift? I don't know what's appropriate! Help!
