If you had Ray Romano reciting the lyrics to Beyoncé's "Crazy In Love" in a television show about an obsessive and abusive relationship on your 2021 bingo card, congratulations, you can stop playing now. HBO Max's new Made for Love trailer has all of the above, plus a sex doll and a dolphin.
Despite the dulcet tones of Romano's Queen Bey recitation, the Made for Love trailer is, well, terrifying. The show follows Hazel (Cristin Milioti), a woman who escapes her manipulative, controlling husband Byron (Billy Magnussen). In the trailer, we see Hazel run away to stay with her father, Herbert, and his "synthetic partner," Diane. Just when she thinks she's free, she realizes that Byron implanted a chip in her brain that allows him to track her. But that's not all.
According to the official synopsis, the chip also has the ability to read her emotions and thoughts and relay them to her ex. In the trailer, it even looks like Byron is able to implant visions or holograms into Hazel's mind, potentially slowly driving her insane. It's like Black Mirror meets You, and as disturbing as it is, it's impossible to look away.
If you're feeling fascinated and terrified after watching the trailer, that's on purpose. The TV show is based on Alissa Nutting's 2017 novel of the same name, and, speaking with Entertainment Weekly of her inspiration for the show, Made for Love showrunner Christina Lee described the tone as "making you feel queasy and delighted at the same time."
