Packing cubes - why?

Why are packing cubes a thing? I have become pretty expert at rolling my clothes and strategically placing them in nooks and crannies in my suitcase. I can’t understand how these cubes actually provide additional space. Has anyone used these successfully and can explain why and how they work?
