Some would say the office is for work. A place for professionalism, determination, and making money. Others, specifically the regional manager of the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin, would say it's the perfect place for a sporting event.
For a show all about working in a normal, run-of-the-mill office, there are a surprising number of sporty moments in The Office. Some involve more athleticism than others, and none compete with office parkour.
In the spirit of the Summer Olympics, I decided to go through the "sports" moments in the show — and I say "sports" in quotation marks, because calling some of these moments "sporty" is an insult to athletes everywhere — and rank them. Where does your favorite moment fall? Ready, set, football cream.
21. Deangelo's Dunk (Season 7, Episode 24)
The Scranton branch's new boss Deangelo Vickers, much like Michael, talks a big game. Upon telling a group of them that he can do Michael Jordan's dunk, Jim asks Deangelo to do an exhibition in the warehouse. After he dunks, the hoop falls on him making Will Ferrell's time on the office short lived.
20. Golfing (Season 4, Episode 17)
Jim decides to actually try and make a sale on the golf course. Unfortunately for him, Andy and Kevin are there as well.
19. Snowball Fight (Season 7, Episode 12)
This may be an unpopular opinion, but Jim totally deserved this after all the years of torturing Dwight. It also brought us this amazing clip of Dwight in wigs.
18. Soccer Game (Episode 5, Season 22)
Everyone tries to suck up to their new boss, Charles, so they decide to play soccer after work. Jim, doesn't know how to play (despite saying that he does) and ducks when the ball is kicked towards him causing Phyllis to get hit in the head.
17. Casino Night ( Season 2, Episode 22)
Poker is on ESPN, so it counts. Plus, Michael is a player in this episode... he's got not one, but two dates: Carol, his real estate agent, and Jan.
16. Thigh Curl Contest (Season 8, Episode 23)
With Dwight Schrute's Gym for Muscles now in the building, Jim tricks these two into a thigh curl contest to see who is the strongest.
15. Ping Pong (Season 4, Episode 12)
When the warehouse gets a ping pong table, Jim ends up spending a lot of his work day playing against Darryl. Eventually, the competition starts to get the best of Pam and Kelly, as the two start talking a lot of smack on the sidelines.
14. Beating Toby (Season 3, Episode 8)
Upon hearing that Toby runs a 7 minute mile (and I'm sorry, but that's pretty impressive), Dwight says he can run faster, so in typical Office shenanigans, Pam pretends to time him... with a thermometer.
13. The Radar (Season 5, Episode 12)
When Angela complains about cars going too fast outside their building, the police put up a speed radar. This prompts the entire office to take turns to see who has the fastest miles per hour. This is just a cold open, but worth the mention.
12. Dwight and Michael's Martial Arts Fight (Season 2, Episode 6)
Both Michael and Dwight like to talk a big game, but it is very rare that we get to see the two go head-to-head with each other.
11. Bets (Season 3, Episode 20)
After the NCAA tournament is over, Kevin is bored and can't stop placing bets. The whole office starts to make bets on the most menial of things. While this is more "sports-adjacent", we're still going to count it.
10. Spin Class (Season 6, Episode 24)
Although this is just the tag at the end of this episode, Dwight taking over the spin class is truly everything.
9. Michael's Ice Skating Birthday Party (Season 2, Episode 19)
Michael loves celebrating all birthdays, but especially his own. But the fact that Michael is actually a really good skater is kind of hot.
8. Volleyball (Season 5, Episode 28)
The twist of Pam being really good at volleyball is amazing. She also finds out she's pregnant in this episode, so it's just a win for her on all accounts.
7. Speed Skating (Season 7, Episode 17)
Michael has been talking about Threat Level Midnight for years and years and in this episode, we finally get to see it in all of its and Steve Carell's ice skating glory.
6. Michael's Flippity Flip (Season 7, Episode 22)
Michael knows that you never leave the court on a miss, so he tries and tries (and tries) again until he sticks the landing.
5. Fun Run (Season 4, Episode 1 and 2)
Rounding out the top five is "Michael Scott's Dunder Mifflin Scranton Meredith Palmer Memorial Celebrity Rabies Awareness Pro-Am Fun Run Race For the Cure." Andy's chaffed nipples need not make an appearance.
4. Beach Games (Season 3, Episode 23)
One of my favorite moments from the whole series is in this episode, when Jim names his team Voldemort and Dwight freaks out. I'm a sucker for anything Harry Potter.
3. Parkour (Season 6, Episode 1)
I know this isn't technically a sport, but it is another great athletic moment. To this day, I still jump on random things and say "parkour" because of this episode.
2. Office Olympics (Season 2, Episode 3)
I would not be doing my job if I didn't have the Office Olympics on this list. This is truly Jim-doing-anything-he-can-to-get-out-of-doing-work at it's peak.
1. Basketball (Season 1, Episode 5)
It would be a flagrant personal intentional foul to not include this as number one. Look at those babies.
What do you think was the best sports moment on the show? Let us know in the comments, and all hail the most athletic group of coworkers in the history of mid-level Scranton-area paper companies to ever exist.
