This 'Game Of Thrones' Heartthrob Is Virtually Unrecognizable In 'Pieces of Her'

If you watched the entirety of Pieces of Her and never noticed a certain Game of Thrones cutie in a major role, then I just want you to know you're not alone. Look, I'm terrible with faces, I'll admit it, but I swear Pieces of Her renders Joe Dempsie unrecognizable. Between the pornstache, the shaggy haircut, and the American accent, I had no idea that Dempsie was the man playing young Nick.

As a diehard Gendry fan, I feel deeply ashamed by my inability to recognize the actor when he's sporting atrocious facial hair. But at the same time, I'm also in awe of his chameleon like acting abilities. After all, it's not like young Nick is a small role. In fact, the actor appears in almost every episode and not once did I suspect I was looking at the man formerly known as Gendry Waters.

Part of my Gendry blindness has to be attributed to the fact that Nick is a monster. The controlling cult leader is a world away from the kindhearted blacksmith with superior rowing skills that Dempsie played on Game of Thrones. Still, this isn't the first time he's played the bad guy — just check out his creeptastic role on The Fades, a criminally short-lived sci-fi/fantasy series that actually predates the hit HBO series.

With that in mind, I have no choice but to blame the goatee. I mean look at that thing on his face, it's simultaneously terrifying and distracting:

And I'm sorry but the man above looks nothing like the hammer-wielding sex god that is Gendry. See below for purely illustrative purposes:

Then again, maybe this is really all Netflix's fault. I may be bad at recognizing faces, but I'm excellent with names. As such, if the episodes didn't autoplay before the end credits had a chance to roll I would have figured out Dempsie was young Nick without the embarrassment of stumbling across this news via IMDb.

Yep, I'm definitely blaming my lousy facial recognition skills on Netflix. And also the goatee, because come on, Dempsie's face is far too lovely to be hidden behind that much unnecessary facial hair.
