Yes, Sam Heughan is strutting around in a kilt and skinny dipping on Men With Kilts, but that's not the only exciting thing happening in the Outlander world (though it is, admittedly, the most enjoyable to look at). After six years and five seasons, an Outlander spinoff is finally on the horizon.
Former Outlander showrunner, Ron Moore, teased the potential expansion of the franchise on Monday, Feb. 22, telling The Hollywood Reporter that "conversations are underway." The executive producer didn't reveal too much, but he did confirm that fans should be hopeful for both a spinoff and a Season 7 renewal. "I think we're going to have good news on both those fronts before too long, so I feel optimistic about it," he said. A vague statement if there ever was one, but that doesn't mean it's not promising.
Fans have been waiting for an Outlander spinoff for years, especially as Diana Gabaldon has continued to publish novellas and books under the Outlander umbrella. Should a spinoff announcement finally come this year, here are the characters most likely to return.
Lord John Grey
Of all of Gabaldon's Outlander spinoffs, the series of novellas about Lord John Grey are some of the most popular and complete. The series includes 10 publications so far, so there's plenty for showrunners to draw on.
Fans have been clamoring for a Lord John Grey spinoff for years, and while everyone from actor David Berry to the CEO of Starz have answered questions about the idea, they've all been frustratingly vague. In a 2020 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch was asked directly about a Lord John Grey spinoff and answered, "We continue to talk on a regular basis about developing the story line around Outlander." Around the same time, Moore, however, was much more optimistic about Lord John Grey's return, telling Deadline, "One never knows where Lord John Grey might turn up next."
