In Defense Of The Jamie & Claire-Less Episode Of 'Outlander'

It was undeniably a Very Good Thing that Brianna on Outlander got to meet her father in the past in Season 4. But there were some negative feelings in the fandom surrounding exactly how she got there. Brianna made her way to the past in the Outlander Season 4 episode "Down the Rabbit Hole," which had some notable divergences from what occurred in Diana Gabaldon's fourth Outlander book, Drums of Autumn. Yet, when you put aside the differences, "Down the Rabbit Hole" is one of Season 4's most effective hours of television. There. I said it.

Any episode of Outlander with zero Jamie or Claire sightings is going to be a tough one to accept. But the Starz adaptation decided to spend the seventh episode focusing on burgeoning new characters Brianna and Roger as they separately made their way to 1769 North Carolina. With Season 4 hitting Netflix, TV Insider ranked the essential episodes to watch. On Twitter, the inclusion of "Down the Rabbit Hole" bothered some fans. More than two years have passed since the episode initially aired, but that hasn't quelled the outrage around Bree's time-traveling episode.

Outside of the fandom, "Down the Rabbit Hole" has been well-received with the episode holding a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. (Full disclosure: that's according to only 10 critics.) But on IMDb, it has fared well too with a score of 8.7 out of 10. (Five other Season 4 episodes were rated lower... which if you want me to bring up an episode I've got a lot of issues with, just mention "Wilmington.")
