It's strange enough to turn on a teen drama and feel more attracted to the teachers than the heartthrobs. But it's absolutely shocking when the hot teacher turns out to be a TV villain you previously felt nothing towards. I found myself on this very disturbing journey as I binge watched Netflix's Fate: The Winx Saga and realized that hot headmaster Silva was also creepy butler Thomas Barrows from Downton Abbey. I have yet to recover from this truly mind-boggling realization.
It's not that actor Robert James Collier hasn't always been handsome. He's really quite lovely to look at. But after Season 1 of Downton Abbey, his character always turned me off. Even as Thomas went from villainous gossip to tortured soul over the seasons, every time he showed up with his slicked back hair, my knee-jerk reaction was to yell at whoever else was in the scene with him to look out. Thomas Barrows was simply a man who couldn't be trusted.
Silva, on the other hand, is a rough-around-the-edges soldier and father figure. He has secrets, but he still seems like a good man. That, plus the scruff, really did it for me in Episode 1. I was so taken, it took me a while to figure out where I recognized the actor from. And, reader, I have yet to recover.
When I pressed play on Fate: The Winx Saga, I expected two things: magic and high school drama. What I got, however, was the realization that I am attracted to Thomas from Downton Abbey. And I'm not the only one struggling to process this information.
This rollercoaster of thirst has sent me down the rabbit hole. Why didn't I think Thomas Borrows was hot? Was it only because of his personality? A big part of me says, "yes." Thomas' scheming was just something I couldn't get over. Though he was a compelling character, it was always hard for me to root for him. But, looking at photos of Thomas and Silva side-by-side, it's also obvious to me what the difference is: the scruff.
According to Men's Journal, a 2016 study found that women were more attracted to men with stubble. But I would like to add to that study with my newfound expertise on the subject. It's not just the facial hair that makes Silva so much hotter than Thomas, it's the vibe. I guess I'm just more attracted to a tortured veteran of a magic war than an ambitious butler who plots to get his co-workers fired.
