Cruel Summer's mission is to make viewers question everything and everyone. Is Jeanette really guilty of seeing Kate in captivity, or is Kate lying because she's angry that Jeanette stole her boyfriend and, basically, life? While Jeanette and Kate's potential culpability has been weighed endlessly by fans, one person who we already know is guilty of a terrible crime is also the one who can't speak for himself: Martin, Kate's kidnapper. In Episode 4's "You Don't Hunt, You Don't Eat," however, we learned a little bit more about Martin that might shed some light on what really happened to Kate.
In 1993, Martin is about to start his new job as the assistant principal at Kate and Jeanette's school. In 1994, however, he's killed when Kate is rescued from his basement, where he kept her locked away for months.
We get a better sense of Martin in the first summer's timeline, as Kate's mother Joy invites him on their hunting trip. On the trip, Martin seems visibly uncomfortable by the guns, and Kate shows him sympathy. Later that night, the two bond when they both find themselves up late at night. They stargaze and share details of their family drama. Martin's father, he tells Kate, died by suicide, which is why he doesn't like guns. Kate also hints that there's drama between her parents, but that they don't want to talk about it.
