Trinity Valley Community College's coach from Cheer Season 2, Vontae Johnson, is just as intense as Navarro College's coach Monica Aldama, although they have very different styles. While Monica acts as a defacto mom for her squad, Vontae is seemingly always the "bad cop," making the squad run suicides to force smiles during routines and telling them straight up when they look messy or tired.
He has a lot to prove. As revealed early on, Vontae used to be on the TVCC squad, coached by none other than his current assistant coach, Khris Franklin. Back in 2013, it was Vontae who seemingly messed up big time on the Daytona bandshell, unable to pull off a stunt during the finals. So he knows what it feels like to lose in a big way and it's clearly that search for some redemption to not only bring TVCC back into the spotlight with their 12th title, but to make up for his own mistakes. It makes their — spoiler alert — 2021 win all the more emotional when you finally see him plunging into the Florida ocean with the rest of the squad. Below, you can check out videos of all the TVCC Daytona performances from then until their big win and see how the squad's evolved.
