Is ‘Younger’ Coming To Broadway? The Author Of The Book Weighs In

There are a few things that Younger fans will always question: Will Liza choose Josh or Charles? Will Liza’s lie ever have the enormous repercussions we expect it will? Will one of Diana’s statement necklaces ever fall off and harm a small child? But, if you’ve ever wondered if Younger — with its musically talented cast — would ever land on Broadway, do we have news for you.

The Dipp’s Natalie Zutter spoke with Younger author Pamela Redmond on what she hopes to see in the series based on her novel when it returns for Season 7 next year — she wants Liza to choose Liza and for Maggie to find happiness, among other things — and Redmond dropped a little hint about the future of the Younger storyline, beyond the novels and the show.

When Zutter asked Redmond to describe her involvement with the show, Redmond explained that she’s visited the writers’ room and the set of the TV Land production, but that she doesn’t offer up any ideas for the series, because, legal.

“The way the rights issues work for me, and I think for most people who sell their books to a television show, is that he [Darren Star] and TV Land own everything: the film and television rights to all the characters, plots, situations, title, everything on that side of it,” she said.

But! But…

“But I own the book rights — and theatrical rights, as well!”

So does that mean we could see Younger on stage?

“I have had interest, actually [from] producers on Broadway,” Redmond told Zutter. “I think it would be a great Broadway show, when Broadway comes back.”

Of course, we shouldn’t head to the TKTS kiosk to buy tickets anytime soon — after all, Broadway is currently shut down through the remainder of 2020 due to COVID-19. But the enthusiasm for a Younger Broadway show is there — especially if it stars a certain Broadway alum. When Zutter told Redmond she could definitely envision Younger on the stage, Redmond said with a laugh, “Starring Sutton Foster!” Naturally.

No Younger on Broadway plans have been announced yet, but should producers move forward with the show, they certainly should look no further than the current Younger TV series cast. Foster, of course, is best known for her Broadway accomplishments. She has two Tony Awards for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical. In 2002, she won for her role as Millie Dillmount in Thoroughly Modern Millie, and in 2011, she won for her performance as Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes.

Then there’s Hilary Duff, who has five studio albums (her third album reached the number two spot on the Billboard top 200), and Miriam Shor (Diana) who’s well known for her role at Yitzak in the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Plus, we already know that Foster, Duff, and Shor are great “on stage” together. In the Season 6 premiere, Liza, Kelsey, and Diana sang Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” at a piano bar, and it was glorious.

No word on if Peter Hermann (Charles) can sing, but deep down, I think we all know he can.
