Close your eyes and picture this: You're married to someone for 39 years and you think you know all there is to know about them. Their drink order. The way they like their steak. The way to win an argument. But what you don't know is that they've been having an annual lunch with their college sweetheart named Pennilyn Lott. OK, now open your eyes and say it with me, "My name is Emily Gilmore and I've been betrayed by my husband Richard."
In the Season 4 episode of Gilmore Girls where Emily learned that her husband of almost four decades has been lying through omission (it's the same thing!) to her about his lunches with Pennilyn, she is, understandably hurt. She loses her cool, and for someone who is usually so composed, that's a big deal!
Emily had been under the impression that Richard's former fiancée, Pennilyn Lott (pause: what kind of a name is that?), was a flame from the past that they'd only see at the Harvard-Yale game tailgate every year. They'd exchange pleasantries and be done with it.
But in Season 4 Episode 9, Pennilyn knew that Lorelai (who tagged along to this game) was opening an inn. And I'm going to venture to say that it wasn't because Pennilyn was doing some light online stalking. No, Richard fesses up to having told Pennilyn at their annual lunch six months earlier, and it. is. crushing. (And no, Richard, it doesn't make it any better that you say you're "just friends" and that Pennilyn didn't tell her husband Stephen either.)
