Shondaland's latest saucy romance for Netflix, Bridgerton, has been hailed as the second coming of the gossip column and the period drama, all in one. Second-born sisters who want to work in publishing? An "outsider" who comments on all the goings-ons while their friends are unaware? Lovers who go off to war? Feel familiar? If Bridgerton reminds you of Gossip Girl and Downton Abbey, you're not alone.
Bridgerton is based on the series of novels by Julia Quinn and charts the scandals of the upper echelon of London society in 1813. Season 1 follows Daphne Bridgerton and her fellow young debs whose "coming out" is plagued by fear of ending up on the wrong pages of Lady Whistledown's gossip pamphlets and, in turn, on the bottom rung at the marriage mart.
It's a story of love, class, and scandal, so I've gathered up all these instances and more where Bridgerton was similar to Downton and Gossip Girl. Dear reader, please enjoy at your perusal. And be warned: Spoilers for Season 1 of Bridgerton and all of Gossip Girl and Downton Abbey follow.
Downton: English Family Affairs
Much like Downton, Bridgerton is focused on the scandals revolving around a singular English family, as the titles of the shows denote. On Downton, it's the clan of the Earl of Grantham, the Crawleys, and the upstairs and downstairs affairs of the residents of Downton Abbey.
