To start it's always nice to bring something for the hostess.  Bottle of wine or a candle are nice.  My brother is sweet and always brings me something he baked esp for me.  Even if I am going to my parents house I like to bring cookies, even a few donuts is nice.  I would suggest you clean up after yourself while trying to stay out of the way, if that makes sense.  I don't think you need to wash all the pots and pans after dinner (honestly it would annoy if a house guest were to do that)

When you’re hosting friends or family for one or two nights at your house, what do you really appreciate most about what they contribute?

I’m always paranoid Im not doing enough as a houseguest! Which sometimes makes me do too much.
