Dear Kelly,

Pretty much every day I buy myself something new to “cheer myself up.” How many cheer up gifts is too many?

-Zoe

Zoe,

I think I’ve received this question in the past from another lost soul, uncheered by her frequency of “cheer up” gifts. I’ve either received it before, or it just feels like I have, because this is a topic of discussion with my friends, like you said, pretty much every single day. “Okay, I definitely need to get myself a treat after today.” “Okay, I definitely need to order sushi tonight.” “Okay, if I don’t browse ballgowns on The Real Real for 2 hours after work I am going to completely freak out.”

I remember the first cheer up gift I bought myself when it was clear that “things” were going to be “bad” for some time, at the beginning of last year. It was a pair of sweatpants that a then-coworker said were the softest she had ever felt. Of course, I overnighted them. Time was of the essence. I was feeling not good.
